So with the latest craze to stay fit and alert whilst maintaining hectic lifestyles, many resort to energy drinks for the added boost of energy to get through the day.

An energy drink is a type of beverage containing stimulant drugs, chiefly caffeine, which is marketed as providing mental or physical stimulation. They may or may not be carbonated, and generally contain large amounts of caffeine and other stimulants, and many also contain sugar or other sweeteners, herbal extracts and amino acids. They are a subset of the larger group of energy products, which includes bars and gels. There are many brands and varieties of energy drinks. (source: Wikipedia)

South Africans are some of the biggest consumers of energy drinks in the world, according to a recent survey. The Analytix Business Intelligence Report, titled “South Africa Brand Report: Consumers of Energy Drinks”, showed that personal consumption of energy drinks is an increasing trend among younger South Africans. The survey, which was completed in January 2012, worked with three popular brands of energy drinks: Bioplus, Power Play and Red Bull. It examined demographics, lifestyle, media consumption , cellphone and internet use.
Association for Dietetics in SA (Adsa) president Berna Harmse says,  “Energy drinks have a high caffeine content, which increases blood pressure and heart rate. Energy drinks differ from sports drinks and enhanced waters, as the ingredients in energy drinks have raised concerns about toxicity and potentially serious adverse effects." Harmse said adults consumed about 400mg of caffeine a day. “It’s not a nutrient,” she said. “You do not require caffeine in your diet. As it is not stored in the body, but rather excreted in the urine, it does have a diuretic effect, causing a risk of dehydration.”

·         X-Plosiv: "The Magic Power"

·         Red Bull: “Gives you Wings”

·         Lucozade: “Replaces Lost Energy”

·         Energade: “It's what you put in”

·         Power Play: “Beware the Kick”

·         Monster: "Unleash the Beast"

The above are some of the popular brands and now there's a release of more extreme energy drinks e.g. Dragon, Cannabis, Demon, Gangster to name but a few. In the States there has been a launch of energy drinks with crude, vulgar names bordering pornographic. One has to wonder about the market that these drinks are being targeted for. The increase of youngsters and students consuming energy drinks is on the rise and manufacturers prefer to affiliate an energy drink with something more hip & contemporary, something kids would find cool and can associate with through gaming, the internet etc.

If one were to run a search on the side effects of energy drinks, one would find a mass of information available on the issue. Some of the side effects: Irritability, Heart arrhythmia, Osteoporosis, Withdrawal pains. The huge quantities of stimulants in energy drinks can make them as risky as “real” drugs. (source: Keith M. As children of our Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ, the bible clearly tells us that we are God’s possession, and in fact, we are the dwelling place of His Spirit. For this reason, we must consider our bodies something sacred -- not something to be trashed or abused. The word defile means to “pollute, foul or corrupt.” Not Helpful

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body."

Simply put, we need to watch what we eat and drink. Not everything that appears to be harmless is just that. In this day and age with an influx of fast foods & especially energy drinks, we need to be extra cautious. Many people have come to accept and use Red Bull and its clones on a daily basis. The one most important thing we need to remember is that energy drinks are simply meth in a can. Yes, meth—methamphetamine, a highly addictive central nervous system stimulant. The more meth you take, the more you crave it and the more you need it. The same thing applies to energy drinks. It is important to understand what so much stimulant does to your body. Intake of more than 400 mg of these stimulants can lead to a number of nasty side-effects:      nervousness, irritability, problems concentrating, sleeplessness, muscle tremors, increased urination, abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmia), decreased bone density, and an upset stomach. These stimulants may also slow the body’s ability to absorb water, leading to dehydration. (Keith M. Graves)

The new energy drink call "Dragon" is an energy drink that shares kinship with "Monster". The dragon is seen as a symbol of strength and  power and holds symbolic meaning for many cultures & religions of the east. It was a creature that brought fear and dread in ancient days however today it has been made hip & cool through tattoos, clothing, by slaying the beast in console & pc games, jewellery, and now energy drinks. You will find a variety of "dragon" energy drinks if you performed a search on the internet. Quite daunting really... So by drinking the energy drink with the image of a dragon on the can/bottle, what type of power and strength is being unleashed within you? You are opening yourself up to a world of darkness. You are giving the enemy access to your body & mind, to take control and manipulate you and your cognitive abilities. Ephesians 6:12 "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."

And yes it may not have had such a drastic effect on yourself the first time and you may think its harmless but isn't that just what the enemy wants? For you to believe that an energy drink with the image of a dragon which the bible refers to as an ancient serpent in Revelation 20:2 won't have an unnatural effect on you? Think again... Revelation 20:2 "And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years"

Energy drinks have become a part of our culture and have become widely accepted. We need to live a healthy lifestyle and should not be easily duped into hurting our bodies. The enemy knows that his time is up and he will use any means possible to manipulate people, especially those who are saved. If you find yourself thinking twice about eating or drinking something, then you should ask yourself why? God could be telling you something... Matthew 10:28 "And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell."
